The MFS Web Sites
The MFS has two web sites, a public web site that anyone in the world can read, and a Members-Only web site that has read access restricted to registered MFS members. There is also a “Welcome” page at mfs.org.au, that allows web surfers to choose which of the above two web sites they wish to visit.
The only content on the Members-Only web site is content that is a benefit of membership, or for members’ eyes only.
Unless needed as context for members-only content, content on the public site is not duplicated on the members-only site. Unless there are good reasons otherwise, content is published on the public site and not the members-only site.
Who is Responsible for the MFS Web Sites?
The MFS Committee appoints the MFS Web Manager. The Web Manager is delegated, authorised and accountable for decisions regarding the structure and content of the MFS web sites. The Web Manager reports to the MFS Committee.
In regard to the structure and technology of the web sites, the Web Manager is advised and assisted by a web team appointed by him or her.
The Web Manager does not in general maintain MFS web content. The publishers of content are those who have the most interest in providing information and keeping it up to date, and that is the activity owners themselves. There are currently about thirty of these editors authorised to provide and maintain public content.
For non-editors wishing to provide public content, the point of contact is R Levingston. However contributors are strongly encouraged to join the MFS and publish their own material, or work through an MFS member who is interested in their events and can publish material for them. No guarantee of service level can be offered otherwise.
Although the primary responsibility for content rests with content owners, all editors are encouraged to be bold and fix anything that needs fixing, with an email advice to the primary content owner where appropriate. The primary content owner can very easily undo any erroneous corrections, and advise the other editor of reasons to avoid a tug-of-war over content.
The Public Web Site
What is on the Public Site?
- Information about all MFS activities and events
- Joining the society
- Public documents like the risk management plan. Drafting of this plan benefitted greatly from research on the web that turned up many examples of Risk Management Plans. The plan is on the public site for information of all members whether registered on the Members-Only site or not, for information of the public, as a resource for other non-profit organisations preparing similar plans, and so that the link can be sent to bodies like the ACT Government who require evidence of our risk management planning. Comments from all members and the public are also welcome.
- A calendar of events of interest to MFS members and members of the public with similar interests. Non-MFS events are welcome, as long as the events are of interest to MFS members and the event organisers provide friendly reciprocal support for the Monaro Folk Society, for example encouraging their participants to join the society, and MFS Events on the same date are allowed top billing. The entries from the calendar are copied into the Monaro Musings Events Calendar, and the MFS Dance News monthly email.
- The catalogue of publicity material
- The catalogue of policy, “how-to” and similar documents
- Public point of contact information
Who is Responsible for the Public MFS Web Site?
The Webmaster is responsible for the structure and content of the MFS public web site. In general this involves oversight and management of others’ activities, not hands-on web building and content management.
Any MFS member who has a reason to publish content can apply to the Membership Secretary for appointment as a content editor on the public site. The criteria applied by the Membership Secretary is current financial membership.
Management of the editor, including advice, warning, suspension and removal, rests with the Webmaster, subject to normal appeals processes.
The Members-Only Web Site
What is on the Members-Only Site?
- Monaro Musings current and historic
- Committee Minutes
- Internal committees’ notices of meetings
- Internal discussion
- Members-only internal contact information
Who is Responsible for the Members-Only MFS Web Site?
The Web Manager is responsible for the structure and content of the MFS Members-Only web site. In general this involves oversight and management of others’ activities, not hands-on web building and content management.
Any MFS member can apply to the Membership Secretary for registration as a user on the Members-Only site. The criteria applied by the Membership Secretary is current financial membership. All members can read and edit the Members-Only content.
Management of Members-Only users, including advice, warning, suspension and removal, rests with the Web Manager, subject to normal appeals processes.
Checks and Balances
Where content is authorised by a specific member, they can set a “watch” flag and they will be emailed immediately any change is made to the page. If the change was unauthorised and not fixing an obvious error, they can undo the change and send an email advice to the member making the change.
The Webmaster can undo any changes to content, and remove any content. The Webmaster is responsible for decisions on suspending or removing editors’ rights in the case of abuse or damage. Like all decisions this can be appealed to MFS Committee and if necessary an appeals tribunal established to rule on the case.
The Membership Secretary is responsible for ensuring that only currently financial MFS members are registered as editors, or as users of the Members-Only web site. This includes locking accounts where there is non-renewal of membership. User names cannot be deleted because of all the history that points to the user, but they can be prevented from being used.
