Maybe just put the main headings on the main page? We have a narrative description of what the reader will find under each main heading.
--LanceC 19:34, 9 January 2009 (EST)
I have put in main headings and first level sub headings. At this stage it appears that our contents summary box will be very big if I put all the levels in. Any suggestions as to how we can get the contents box to a reasonable size?

The site map is looking good to me. On the subject of having http://www.mfs.org.au/mediawiki/ and http://www.mfs.org.au/memberwiki/ as two separate instances, here is a randomly chosen example LanceC 21:49, 7 January 2009 (EST)

Re. heading on the main page; My thought was to have use "summarising text" to describe the predominant features of each heading. See example along side "Activities"
Good idea to clear the help stuff off the main page to where it will be usefull as help.BobH 21:39, 3 January 2009 (EST)
Looking good but I agree with Myk (3Jan09) that we need headings on the Main Page for Music and Dance, and probably Performance. Anyone mind if I move the "Help" stuff that is currently on the Main Page, to the Help Page? This will clear the decks for our real Main Page. I will put a few words of welcome in its place.
--LCourt 19:36, 3 January 2009 (EST)
So, what are we going to put on the main page? The old web site main page was mostly a list of upcoming events and some links. Myk 21:27, 2 January 2009 (EST)
- How about a few words of introduction then our top level links - the first lines from the centre of the mind map if you will - something like:
- Welcome text
- HEADING: PUBLIC INFO
- - Events Diary link
- - Dance menu link
- - Music Groups link
- - Singing Group link
- - Merry Muse link
- - Membership link.
- - Monaro Musings link
- - Webmaster link
- - Public Photos link
- - Public Discussion Link
- - Catalogue Link
- - Resources link
- - Links page link
- - About MFS link
- - Contact Us link
- HEADING: MEMBERS ONLY INFO
- - Link to Members Only menu
- Maybe this is too long for the main page?
- LCourt 21:54, 2 January 2009 (EST)
- (Hope you don't mind me editing your formatting there, Lance)
- I think it would be better to group the main links into categories - Music, Dance, Events, Galleries, Resources would probably cover it all. Myk 06:48, 3 January 2009 (EST)
- Oh, and I don't think we need to explicitly split things up by member/non-member. If there is info that is only available to members, it should be on protected pages, with a "Authorisation required" page set up as a redirect telling members what to do to get an account set up and authorised for member access to the Wiki. User groups to create
Comments please, should we request a second instance of MediaWiki for our memberwiki?

Quoting Restrict Viewing
"MediaWiki is designed for two basic access modes:
1. Everyone can view every single page on the wiki (with the possible exception of a few special pages). This is the mode used by Wikipedia and its sister projects.
2. Anonymous users can only view the Main Page and login page, and cannot edit any page. This is basically the same as the above, in terms of technical implementation (just an extra check for every page view), which is why it exists. This is the mode of operation used by certain private wikis such as those used by various Wikimedia committees."
I wonder if we can implement two Wikis? One for members only as per option 2, and one for the public as per option 1?
Alternatively, maybe the wiki could for members only as per option 2, and the public data (mainly the Events calendar) could be in the Main Page, and in ordinary HTML built using free software Amaya and Excel saved as HTML pages, with cross-links.
Your thoughts?
LCourt 18:23, 5 January 2009 (EST)
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:User_rights looks relevant
LCourt 17:07, 5 January 2009 (EST)
I see the following groups as being useful:
- Administrators - All privileges, very few members
- User Admin - Ability to grant member access, for membership secretaries
- Wiki Editor - Able to edit pages in the wiki
- Wiki Author - Able to create new pages in the wiki, preferably also able to edit pages they created.
- Wiki Upload - Able to upload files in the wiki.
- Member - Access to member-protected pages (sections if possible?)
Obviously, people may have more than one group, and there will be some overlap in permissions.
So, I guess the question becomes, is this level of fine-grained control possible in MediaWiki?
Myk 07:09, 3 January 2009 (EST)
Also, do we want to spend time maintaining such fine-grained control? LCourt 09:26, 3 January 2009 (EST)
Logo
In order to set the logo, I have made the following changes in LocalSettings.php
Change: $wgEnableUploads = false; To: $wgEnableUploads = true;
Change: $wgLogo = "$wgStylePath/common/images/wiki.png"; To: $wgLogo = "http://www.mfs.org.au/MfsLogoTransparent135.gif";
I also uploaded the logo using FTP. When I uploaded to public_html it appeared in WWW, don't know why.
